Photography Contest Site Targets Amateur Photographers

In an effort to keep a Chiang Mai based photography contest fair, the organizers are asking contestants not to enter with DSLR camera pictures.

Photography Contest Site Targets Amateur Photographers

Angela Aromdee - owner of ThailandPhotoContest.com - announced today that 2016 will be the last year they accept pictures taken with DSLR cameras for their anual photography contest. Up until now all pictures submitted to the site were considered, but - going into 2017 - that is going to change.

"Technology is advancing so fast. Even smartphones take better pictures today than most high end DLSR cameras did 10 years ago" says Aromdee. "You can only imagine the picture-quality coming from an up-to-date professional grade DSLR camera."

According to Aromdee, this move isn't to eliminate professional photographers from the competition, but rather to also include those that don't have professional grade equipment. "It's all about creating an environment where everyone has a fair chance at winning. In our eyes, just because someone can afford a ten thousand dollar camera - while most don't - should not mean they automatically win the competition."

Aromdee is hoping that this move will encourage more amatuer Thai photographers to submit their pictures to the contest. She agrees it will be hard to monitor what device each picture was taken with, but hopes people will be honest with her when they submit their competition entry.

"It is a tricky rule to enforce. We have a pretty solid reputation in the amatuer photography community here in Thailand so we're honestly just hoping people will honor our request. The site never was a professional photography showroom and we sincerely hope to keep it that way going forward."

Aromdee goes on to explain how they have had contestants win with cellphone camera pictures in the past, and how - more recently - some of the contest winners used mirrorless travel cameras to shoot the winning shots, but insists it has always been a tough call for them to decide who got to win. "Should we choose someone who took an excellent studio-quality picture of something ordinary or someone who took a less professional picture of something extraordinary? It's a tough call. So we're hoping - going forward - this new submission rule will simplify things a little for everyone involved."
