Blackbetty – Haphazard Collection of Characters Witnessing The Arcs of Their Survival

By: Get News
Set of stories marked by their redemptive beauty and frank, gritty reality

Marco North, photographer, filmmaker and author, launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund Blackbetty, an episodic series that examines an Eastern European city under quarantine, digging beneath the skin of the survivors. Flawed, charismatic characters populate these stories: a single parent, a want-to-be-hero, a small-time criminal, a security guard with no office to protect, a young couple convinced they are soul mates. The campaign goal is to raise $5,000 by July 21, 2016. The funds received will make the episodic series a reality.

What is remarkable about this project, is that it is inspired by the real-life events of North’s life. Nine years ago, his infant daughter was kidnapped to Moscow and has been stuck there without any chance of leaving. North followed her, and became an expat in order to protect and care for her. Eva is now 11, and has substantial,  natural talent as an actress. She delivered an emotionally raw performance in Whale, directed by her father, in preparation for Blackbetty.

Blackbetty is a panoramic yet intimate view of an imaginary city in Eastern Europe that has been quarantined. The story begins a few months after the epidemic has annihilated most of the population. The characters are struggling to maintain or abandon morality in the face of overwhelming chaos going on inside every survivor as they adapt to their new life. The virus (given the street name Blackbetty) has one simple result: when a person falls asleep, they die. The only way for the main characters to stay alive is to take various drugs that keep them awake, or in a state that is not sleep. The most fascinating and unexpected part of the condition is that people still dream.

The only cases of immunity are children under the age of fifteen. Anyone fourteen or younger is still a carrier, but they sleep without risk. Imagine a parent, awake the entire night then somehow making breakfast for their child with limited food and resources. The child wakes, and the parent is dreaming as they sit at the kitchen table.

Themes of faith, the loss of this faith and the rediscovery of it are common in this bleak world.

North developed the script, based on his own experiences in Moscow in conjunction with some early casting of classically trained Ruyssian actors. Please keep in mind this is an “all-or-nothing” deal. If the campaign does not reach the funding goal, then the project cannot move forward. So know that any amount given can make a difference. This is also an incredible opportunity to be a part of a special project! Help the campaign reach its goal by sharing this on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks. The more people know about this, the more support the campaign will receive.
